Nick's Gallery
Some pictures of Nick in action
Environmental Variables (Australia) (1998)
- A shot from some distance (and fuzziness) of
Babel Building, University of
Melbourne, wherein the Linguistics & Applied Linguistics department
is housed
- Another shot of Babel...
- ... and a third.
- The door of the University of Melbourne Information Technology
Services Helpdesk, where
I earned my crust.
- A representative workstation
and telephone at the Helpdesk.
- Nick and his co-workers at ITS in early 1998
- In gravity (bar Mark Boland)
- In levity (bar Mike Williams ---
someone always has to spoil it!)
- A tram, characteristic mode of
transportation to the University of Melbourne, stopping at Swanston
& Faraday (facing from the Information Technology Services building
into Mathematics).
- East side, University
of Melbourne, outside Mathematics, heading towards Student Administration.
Environmental Variables (America) (1999)
- The hotel room where I stayed for my first
week in the country (Feb 1999), in downtown Costa Mesa. It is not for nought
that the locals call it Costa Misery...
- The grand entrance to my apartment
(and most of the apartment itself, in the process). Highlights include: my
stapler, my bowl of apples, my Map Of Australia tablecloth, my beach chair
on the patio, and in the lower right corner the Not-Originally-So-Impossible-To-Shut
bottom drawer of my filing cabinet.
- My kitchen, featuring my microwave,
my fridge, my stovetop, and my serious lack of paper storage space.
- Not for the fainthearted: My bathroom.
- Return visit to America (July 2006): three studies of "The Shed" (the TLG archives, the small room containing the totality of Greek literature)
- With Archimedes, my favourite Dorian
- Manuel Palaeologus said what?!
- Startled in the shed.
The Man, the Intellectual (1998)
Nick, unshaven as usual, engrossed
in civil discourse and in training as a talking head.
Nick, in three stances of high didacticism, being ignored by
fellow postgraduate Anthony Jukes in the Linguistics Tutors' Room,
University of Melbourne:
-
"What's he up to, anyway?"
- "The Rhetorical Use of
the Index Finger"
-
"Why is this man gesticulating at me?"
Nick, startled to find they are
coming to take him away, after all...
Nick, inflicting said didacticism on hapless first years, in five stances:
- "The very kempt tutor
dives for cover"
- "There it is! Just out
of camera range!" (Memo: never let your students film you...)
- "If you avoid eye
contact, you see, you give the semblance of pensiveness..."
- "And this reminds me of
a very droll anecdote concerning a phonologist and a syntactician..."
- "When all else fails,
do the Macarena"
Nick, the eve
of his going to America (Feb 1999). No, he is not happy.
